How Long Does Fibroid Surgery Take?
This article is for general information only and does not replace a personal medical consultation.
The duration of fibroid surgery depends on the size, number and location of the fibroids and on the surgical technique. In general it ranges from 30 minutes to 2.5 hours. Below you will find durations by method, preparation, recovery and frequently asked questions, as explained by Op. Dr. Hüseyin Kılıç, obstetrician and gynaecologist in Ziyapaşa, Adana.
What Are Fibroids and Who Gets Them?
Fibroids are benign tumours arising from the muscle layer of the uterus. They often cause no symptoms but may lead to heavy periods, pelvic pain, frequent urination and infertility. They are more common in women aged 30 to 50, and the risk may be higher with a family history or high hormonal sensitivity.
Types of Fibroid Surgery
Open myomectomy
Removal through an abdominal incision, preferred for multiple or large fibroids. Hospital stay and recovery are longer than with other methods.
Laparoscopic myomectomy
Performed through small incisions with a camera and special instruments. It may offer less pain, faster recovery and a cosmetic advantage in suitable patients.
Hysteroscopic myomectomy
Fibroids protruding into the uterine cavity are cut and removed through the vagina. No abdominal incision is needed and most patients can go home the same day.
Duration by Method
- Open myomectomy: about 1.5–2.5 hours; longer with large or numerous fibroids.
- Laparoscopic myomectomy: usually 1–2 hours, depending on experience and fibroid position.
- Hysteroscopic myomectomy: mostly 30–60 minutes; fluid balance and how far the fibroid extends into the cavity can affect duration.
Preparation
Blood tests and imaging such as ultrasound or MRI are performed and an anaesthesia assessment is completed. Fasting for 6–8 hours is usually advised. Medications affecting bleeding are adjusted on the doctor's advice, and stopping or reducing smoking supports healing.
Recovery
- Open: 3–5 days in hospital; return to daily activities often takes 4–6 weeks.
- Laparoscopic: often 1–2 days in hospital; daily life in 2–4 weeks.
- Hysteroscopic: most go home the same day; daily life in 1–2 weeks.
Wound care, pain control and early mobilisation support recovery. Avoid heavy lifting and intercourse for the period your doctor recommends.
Pregnancy After Fibroid Surgery
Removing fibroids that distort the uterine cavity may improve the chance of pregnancy in some patients. Timing should be planned with the doctor, taking into account the location and number of removed fibroids and healing of the uterine wall.
